Budapest Spring Festival (BSF) was launched in 1981 and it has developed to become the biggest and most renowned cultural event of Hungary. Globally acclaimed stars, famous artists as well as talented young artists appear at the one-month-long festival starting mid March.
The agenda is dominated by music events hosted by eminent cultural institutions of the Hungarian capital such as the State Opera House, the Music Academy, the National Gallery, the Palace of Arts and Matthias Church to name a few.
The versatile programmme includes opera and operetta, chamber music, jazz and crossover concerts, theatre, folk music, folk dance, exhibitions and some novelties every year.
In 2005 the festival was awarded Kulturpreis Europa by Kulturforum Europa (the establishment of the association was the initiative of ex German foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, in 1992, aiming to promote the European unity).
Moreover, the tekintélyes Dutch website Lokale Festiviteiten, which sets up the list of the 50 best festivals of Europe every year, ranked BSF 38th in 2003 and 25th in 2005 respectively.
