The Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden, which was established in 1866, is one of the first zoos on the globe. More than 700 species represent the fauna of the tropical, temperate and cold climate zones. The garden offers 2000 plant species, many of them colourful flowers, a bonsai exhibition and unique rock gardens to the visitors as well as an exotic atmosphere at the tropical Palm House and the marine aquarium representing the vibrant colours of the coral reefs. Along the Great Lake Promenade, also venue to the Summer Evening Concerts, a new Crocodile House has been built, which provides the home to giant snakes, chameleons and special insect species too, beyond the crocs. The fishing exhibition has been renovated too, in order to improve the presentation of the Hungarian sweet water species and the fishing traditions. For children we offer ZOOLIMPIA games to compare their skills with that of the animals and the Playground and Play House to have fun. Children can also get to know the animals at the Állatsimogató (Animal Fondling Section) and in the ‘Animals in Action’ project, presented by the caretakers.
