FINA World Junior Swimming Championships

The junior World Championships are the youngest among the major FINA swimming events, its inaugural edition took place in 2006 in Rio de Janeiro. The first three meets took place in South America, then it was staged in Dubai where the championships reached another level thanks to the easier-to-access location. The trend went on in Singapore and most recently in Indianapolis 2017, where 700 young swimmers represented 91 countries, a record in participation. Though this event is 'designed' to discover the future stars of aquatics, a couple of times already-crowned young Olympic champions 'returned' to race in this age-group event, like Ruta Meilutyte (LTU) in 2013 or Penny Oleksiak (CAN) in 2017. Though the usual pathway is to shine first among the juniors then conquer the senior waters what the likes of Mack Horton (AUS), Kyle Chalmers (AUS) or Rikako Ikee (JPN) did. Now the 7th edition commences and Budapest will see another historical milestone as this is going to be the first junior Worlds in Europe.
